The secret to understanding finance: it's only a dozen ideas

If you've watched more than a few of my videos, something should be dawning on you — the thing I said right back at the beginning. The same small handful of basic concepts keeps coming up, explaining everything: balance sheets, investment, how venture capital works, optionality, clever financing structures. All of it.

Every aspect of finance basically comes down to a dozen really simple ideas.

And they're not academic ideas. They're the exact same concepts being used in a million conversations a day, all over the world — among investors, finance directors, bankers, and smart entrepreneurs. That's the whole club. There's no secret handshake. There's just that dozen ideas, and the people who have them at their fingertips.

Once you do, the whole thing begins to make sense. Connections start to form. You get the language — that language of finance, that network of ideas — and finance stops being a wall and starts being a map.

So why does finance feel so hard?

Because it's shrouded — deliberately or not — in difficult language and intimidating numbers. That's the costume. Underneath it, becoming familiar with the language is genuinely easy, and ninety per cent of the numbers are no harder than mid-school arithmetic. Percentages. Some ratios. That's most of it.

Which is why it's such an unfair advantage. For an entrepreneur especially, knowing your way around finance is incredibly powerful — and because most people run away from it, a little real understanding puts you visibly ahead of nearly everyone else in the room. Investors notice within minutes. So do boards. So do the people deciding whether to back you.

The way in is simple: lots of small, simple concepts that build on each other. The more you expose yourself to them, the more the connections form, until one day you've got the whole map in your mind — the language, the concepts, how they fit together. And boosh: you're ahead of the pack.
